Vintage Farmhouse Bathroom Makeover

Vintage Farmhouse Bathroom Makeover on a Small Budget | Denise on a Whim
I'm finally finished with what I'm calling my
Vintage Farmhouse Style Bathroom Makeover
and thrilled to be sharing it all with you today!

My rental house bathroom was in desperate need of change.
It all started with a shower curtain...
Shortly before Christmas, I realized I desperately needed a new shower curtain.
I looked around online for a while,
knowing that this was a purchase I wanted to be sure of
since it isn't something new I buy very often.
But I also didn't want to break the bank.

I finally decided on this curtain from At Home.
It was only $25 and I really like the puckering.

I also grabbed these new hooks for only $3 on clearance.
I had played around with making my own out of some wood slices,
but who can beat $3 for a faux wood look??

Before we go any further, here is the before (along with the after).

I've had the same decor in my bathroom for quite a long time now
and I was way overdue for a change!

Once I had the shower curtain in place,
I got a on a real tear to change up everything in the room!
I ended up getting a gift card for Kohl's for Christmas
and I used it to purchase these pretty eyelet cafe curtains.
They cost me $18 and the curtain rod a mere $4.
I only really need to worry about a curtain on the bottom half of the window so a cafe curtain
was the perfect option for privacy and natural light all at the same time.

The mason jars on the window sill cost me $1 each from a yard sale.

The new shower curtain and cafe curtain really got me in the farmhouse mood.
I decided to just go big or go home!
(Technically, I already was home, in my bathroom, but whatever. You get the point.)

My next stop was the thrift store.
I had one of these glass containers and picked up the other three there.
50 cents each.
Then I filled them with cotton swabs, cotton balls, make-up removers and white bath salts.
I didn't like the way they looked just sitting on the counter,
so I put together this small riser from some scrap wood and gave it a coat of stain.

This small chalk painted basket is another 50 cent thrift store find.
It's perfect for holding lotions.

I bought this kleenex box cover at the same thrift store.
It was a very light color so I added some stain to darken it up.

I searched around for a toothbrush holder I liked and just couldn't find one
I cared for that didn't cost an arm and a leg.
So I opted for some blue mason jars to hold the brushes and paste tubes.
A $1.79 oil bottle holds mouthwash.
The mug I bought on etsy for $9.99 because I really love enamelware,
the color was perfect, and the $10 price tag was more than worth it because I was able
to convince my son to get rid of his spiderman cup that he's had for way too long now!

Sorry, Spidey.
But you just weren't fitting in with the farmhouse theme...

I purchased this vintage magazine ad a few years ago with the idea of framing it.
I thought it would be perfect for a bathroom.
Turns out, I was right!

With the addition of 5 new hand towels I got on sale for $26 altogether
(my favorite being that cute little ruffled white one there),
this corner of the bathroom was complete!

You've already been introduced to my vintage scale wall hook up here on the left.
Check out the post for more info on how I made that.

On my closet door, I added this unconventional towel hook.
It is actually the hanger off a garment bag, unbent, which I'm using as my towel bar.

Above the medicine cabinet, which I framed out with stained 2x4s,
sits a few vintage glass medicine bottles and another thrifted piece,
this fun little handheld mirror.
It got a coat of dark stain, too.

I added stain on the cupboards, without sanding first.
Since this isn't my own house
and I don't get offers of any money deducted off my rent for fixes,
I didn't go to the trouble of sanding the chipping and cracking poly
off the cabinet doors and drawer faces.
Instead, I used the chipping to my advantage and let the stain soak in where it could
and leave those areas dark and definitely with more character
than the orangey wood that was on them before.
Here, the top portion the cupboard in the photo has been stained and the bottom door face hasn't yet.
A noticeable difference in the color of the wood!

On the other side of the counter is a tiered stand I made to hold makeup,
contact stuff and some other odds and ends I use daily.
Along with another jar I had to hold some soaps.

Above the toilet area, I started with a new pallet sign
and a lined wire basket for holding extra toilet paper rolls.

Then I added this small salvaged drawer as a wall shelf.
It was just the perfect size to hold a few more clear glass bottles,
a sentimental ruler box, a clearance candle
and these 2 super fun vintage finds I picked up after starting the bathroom makeover.
The vintage rubbing alcohol bottle and vicks jar were the perfect final pieces!

Above my new sign,  I added this old pallet and vintage hanger decor.

I've had these pants hangers for a long time now and finally found a good repurpose for them!
I've always thought they would make fun hooks.
Paired with the end piece of wood from a pallet, and attached with a simple L bracket.
I think they look sensational!

The pallet board acts as a ledge for more decor and the hangers are great
for a few more glass medicine bottles that serve as bud vases.

I hope you've enjoyed seeing my bathroom makeover.
I've certainly had fun putting it together
and am starting to feel so much better about my house now!
Next up, bedroom and kitchen!
