Jewelry Box {with checker drawer pulls}

We recently finished this little jewelry box.
I debuted it on Monday in a photo of our Broken Chair Chalkboard Shelf.

Eric built this for me to paint and it's so cute!
This was bare wood, so I started with some latex paint in a light blue shade.
Over that I added some Ce Ce Caldwell's Pittsburgh Gray.

But my favorite part are the drawer pulls!
These are checker pieces painted with Virginia Chestnut and a dry brush coat of Santa Fe Turquoise.
I bought the checkers awhile back at a local store and had previously painted these 3.
I love how they look on these small drawers.
Just the right size for this little cutie!

I also cut a vinyl stencil and painted the daisies, 1 on each side and 2 on the top, with the light blue paint as well.
I think this would be just perfect for special young lady!

A Little Project for Me!

It's pretty rare that I actually work on a project meant for me. We're usually too busy trying to prepare for a show. And now, with the addition of our permanent booth at Caledonia Vintage Marketplace, things will probably only get worse. Let's hope business is that good anyway. :)

But a few weeks ago, I decided to get a print made of a photo I'd had taken of the kids and I about a year ago. I hate to say I'd waited that long to get prints made, but it's true. Sometimes things just get crazy and you forget little things like that.

But I figured it was high-time to replace another picture I had in my house so I got this one printed too. Of course, when I got home, I didn't have a frame to put it in. When it comes to my own frames, I always gravitate toward nice, chocolate brown tones. But, I figured I might as well put some of my painting skills to good use. So I grabbed a thrift store frame. It was shiny silver. Not my taste at all. But, no fear. I had my Ce Ce Caldwells' paints on hand!
I painted a nice coat of Virginia Chestnut on the frame and let it dry. Then I added Santa Fe Turquoise over the brown, brushing up and down, left and right, making sure to deliberately let the brush strokes show. I love how the brown peeks out from under the strokes and in the details on the frame.
The colors were a great match for the photo itself. With the filter on it, the picture definitely has a nice vintage feel and the color of my shirt and eye shadow coordinate so nicely with the chalk paint colors I chose.
I couldn't be happier with how it turned out.
And ugly silver frame would never do, but now it is a focal point for one corner of my living room. :)

Chalkboard Shelf from a Broken Chair

Last fall, we were lucky enough to get permission to raid an old barn. And boy, did we ever! :) We got lots of cool goodies from that adventure!
While we were there, we peeked into an old silo too. In it, was this old broken chair back.
I'm so glad we grabbed it, even tho, at the time, I had no idea what I was going to do with it!

I finally found inspiration from Angie at Knick of Time Interiors with her awesome collection of repurposed chair backs. You should definitely check out her post, too, if you haven't seen it yet.
When we picked this one up, it was basically just the back and what I think may have been an arm of the chair. I detached the arm, cleaned it all off with soapy water, and started painting.
I decided to make the back into a chalkboard area. Who doesn't love chalkboard, after all?

For the sides, I used Duck Egg blue under Old White. I painted the cross pieces and the spindles in Santa Fe Turquoise and added Smokey Mountain over that.
Then I distressed and waxed.
I knew I wanted to add a shelf. And it just so happened that the arm I had removed was almost a perfect fit. Eric had to trim it a bit, but it worked out great! I gave that the same paint job as the rest, Duck Egg and Old White on the top and bottom of the shelf, and Santa Fe Turquoise and Smokey Mountiain on the outside edge.

It's just the right size for a few antique bottles. :)
I added three white hooks to the bottom spindle.
Still, something was missing...

I wanted to put something between the sides and the chalkboard area, but was unsure what I wanted to use there. One day at work, I was looking at some backgrounds for a design I was working when I came across a denim stock photo. Then it hit me! I could cut up an old pair of jeans to attach to my chair back.
I went home and grabbed a pair of my daughter's jeans that had grown too small, cut them into strips and painted some Old White and Santa Fe onto the denim. Once it had dried, I simply folded it so the raw edges would be in back and sewed a cute little button on to keep it tucked together. Then stapled it to the back of the chair!
The denim strips would be perfect for using as a memo board with some simple  clothespins, don't you think?
I just love how this one turned out! Hope you like it too :)

We Hit the Motherload!

We have really accumulated a lot of stuff this week! Oh my indeed! My garage is absolutely filled to capacity (and I still have to add another dresser! lol).
Just look at the stuff we found/bought on the cheap/received this week...

First up, is this old barn pulley.
 And this fabulous vintage trunk.
Both traded for something Eric had. No cost. :)

Then there's this child's desk and hutch.

 And coordinating mirror.
All 3 were curbside pick ups!

And we have this old boy.
 With his matching mirror.
Alas, this one is not ours.
But we get to redo it for its owner nonetheless! :)

I found this poor thing on the side of the road.
She's feeling rather poorly.
But the top has a beautiful shape
(perfect as a sign/hookboard/shelving unit/whatever!)
And just look at her legs!
I know we will use these pieces for something amazing!

And last, but not least, the big score!
We have a friend who sets up the rummage sale at her church.
Wouldn't you know it... we got in on the presale!
9 gorgeous pieces.
Plus this white dresser that hasn't made it to my house yet.
See how lovely these chairs are?
2 of them match. 2 of them don't.
But they all have beautiful detail!
And check out this little lady!
Must be some kind of sewing storage unit.
See the cute little drawer cubby in there?
So sweet!
And all 10 pieces for just $112!

See? I told you...
We hit the Motherload!
Hooray!

Hope you all have a great weekend.
I have a feeling I'm going to be very {very!} busy! lol

Happy Birthday to My Blog!

I just realized that today is the actual birthday of my little blog.

Happy Birthday to Me! :)

Last year on May 2nd, for my very first post, I wrote about going to pick up a craigslist desk.

Here's a pic of the desk when we picked it up.

This really was one of our first furniture purchases.
Not only was I just getting the blog going, but we had only recently decided to get our business going too.

We started working on projects and doing craft shows, but it took a little longer to get the blog up and running the way I wanted to.

This year I've really kicked it into gear by posting more of our projects, linking to parties and promoting the blog on Google+, Pinterest and Hometalk. We've certainly grown a lot since last year.
And how fitting that one of the first projects we linked up, and certainly the one that gained me some great exposure and helped to grow my blog, would be this very same desk, all painted and prettied.

Here she is in all her glory...
If you missed the post, you can find it here

My blog has been so gratifying for me. It's been so wonderful to have the blogging community out there welcome us with open arms. It feels amazing to know that people really enjoy seeing our projects.

So I think I should go home and celebrate this birthday with some cake and ice cream.
Sounds like a pretty good plan to me! :)

Waste Not, Want Not!

Just a quick post today to remind you why it's good to be a hoarder! lol

You may remember the Barn Wood Hook Board we made for a friend.
We cut a cool piece of chippy old barn wood for that project.
After cutting, we had 2 pieces left over.
Well, Eric saved the pieces.
Shortly after, I picked them up and realized that they fit perfectly together to make a little self-standing easel.

Eric glued them together, I added a bulldog clip and there you have it...
A cute little rustic easel for your desktop or for holding a picture.

And that proves it... it's good to be a hoarder! :)
