Our Entertainment Center Gets a Makeover!

Dresser Makeover via http://deniseonawhim.blogspot.com
If you follow my blog, you might already know that most of what I show you are things we make for shows or for our booth. It's rare that I make something for myself. Well, until recently that is. Lately I've been transforming my own living room with new DIY projects. Today I'm showing you the project that started it all!
In our house, we use a dresser as an entertainment center. I used to have a legitimate one, but it was older, and cheaper and, quite frankly, became unsafe for use! I brought this old dresser out of my bedroom and started using it instead. Here's a picture of the before.
(Sort of anyway. You might notice I already started on it before I thought about the before picture. So very typical of me!)
Anyway, here it is with games sitting beside it and a popcorn tin sitting next to it. Yeah, it was a real mess around our house that day. But that's rarely the case ;)

I had been meaning to paint this for a very long time. Very long. But only got around to it this January. Better late than never I suppose...

I used a combination of CeCe Caldwell in Virginia Chestnut and American Paint Company in Treasure Box and Peacock.

On the top, the undercoat is Virginia Chestnut with Treasure Box over it, leaving some of the brown peeking through. I left all but a few of the larger knicks and scratches right on it as I kind of like the character it gives this old girl.

On the edges I also dry brushed Treasure Box onto the brown.

The inset stripes at the top of the front also got a coat of Treasure Box before the brown went on. Love how they look just ever-so noticeable now!

On the two top drawers and the cupboard door, I used a small brush to paint the leafy insets with Peacock. Then I added Treasure Box onto the drawer fronts

Loving how that part turned out!

Also loving the pretty new Hobby Lobby knobs I got for the top drawers!

The 2 drawers inside that middle cupboard also got a coat of Peacock. For a little surprise of my favorite color when I open the door!

The middle drawers got a coat of Peacock right over the original wood stain. Nice and shabby-like.  And pretty glass knobs that look so well aged. Also from Hobby Lobby.

For the bottom drawers I used a coat of Treasure Box first and then layered brown onto it.
These little faux keyholes are the only pieces of original hardware I kept. I only lightly brushed the brown onto them to keep them mostly that pretty pale blue!

And here are the new pulls for the bottom drawers. I added Treasure Box to these as well.

Now I honestly believe she is a beautiful dresser. I mean, entertainment center. Just look at these curves. I'd never really noticed them before her makeover.

I'm so glad I painted this old girl because now I totally love her. And also, I got my living room in order because of her. After the work she had done, she definitely needed some more dignified companions than popcorn tins and toy bins keeping her company!

Since I started this project, I've rearranged my gallery wall and added a cool Rusty Metal Shelf, moved the kids toys into their rooms and made a Printer's Tray Shelf for above the tv, which I'll be sharing with you soon. One thing definitely led to another in this case, but I couldn't be happier with how things have turned out!
