A Button Daisy

A broken frame. A placemat from the thrift store. Paint. Vintage buttons. A little embroidery thread and some glue. That's all it took to make this cute little wall hanging.

The frame is one I picked up last summer from a barn sale. The inside edge of the frame broke when I was cleaning it. So, I broke the other side too, to even it up a little. I pretty much never throw anything away!

I had painted it awhile ago. With Annie Sloan Primer Red. But I wasn't quite ready to make anything with it yet.
A month or so ago, I stopped at our local thrift store. I've mentioned it before. It's called Flat River Outreach Ministries (or FROM, for short). The thrift store proceeds go to the food bank that it also operates. In addition, they provide financial assistance for families in their time of need too. It's a great organization. And another reason I'm proud of my little town of Lowell. :)

I picked up a few old corduroy style placemats while I was there. 2 green and 1 teal.
I cut the green one to size and stapled it to the back of the red frame.

Then I got out my tin of vintage buttons. I picked out a bunch of white ones and placed them on the mat in the shape of a daisy. I wasn't sure about it, but a friend came over and saw it lying on the floor. She said she really liked it. That was enough for me!
So later that night I glued all of the white buttons, and one big yellow button, onto the mat and let them dry overnight.
In the morning, I got out some embroidery thread and stitched a small stem onto the flower.
I was originally thinking I would stitch all of the buttons on, but I didn't really have the time for all of that. In other words, I got lazy. But, hey, it happens! :)
I still think it looks pretty darn cute with out the stitching.

  9. So love vintage buttons. Only thing is I tend to hoard them, silly huh? Love your button daisy, can't blame you for not sewing them all on, it still looks great. Nothing wrong whatsoever with gluing on. It looks so cute. Simple cute art is always so pleasing.
Think I need to make one of these, maybe do 2 or 3 with different flowers, why not? See what you've inspired? Happy days
