A Charming Picket Fence

Last week I posted a little tutorial on how to make your own
wire flowers.
Today I'd like to show you a quick piece of decor I made with those.
I snagged a couple pieces of garden picket fencing from a sale last summer. I previously used one to make a little sign. But the 2nd one has just been sitting around. Waiting.

Once I started making these cute and easy little wire flowers, I got inspired!
So I took out some burlap, roughly marked off where it would show between the pickets, and alternately painted it with Barcelona Orange and Johnston Daffodil.

I painted a light coat of Santa Fe Turquoise over the fencing and attached my burlap to the back, trimming it off after I had stapled it on.
My wire flowers were all set to go. I had used buttons that would coordinate with my paint colors for this piece. And I painted a little Johnston Daffodil on the flowers I was going to place over the orange, just to make them pop a little more.
I simply attached them by sewing them onto the burlap and this cute little piece was finished.
This charming little picket fence is the perfect match for our shutter shelf and crafty spring bouquets!

I'm loving how this turned out. Hope you do too!

My Little Bud Turns 5

Any of you that have young children know what a joy they are. (And also what a handful they can be!) But I have to brag just a little about my Christopher today. He's turning five today, and I just couldn't be more of a proud momma than I am of my little guy.

I went to his conference last night and his teacher and I were talking about his progress from the beginning of the year until now. Personally, I have noticed a distinct change in him within the past few weeks. He seems to have gotten older. More mature. It's like all of a sudden, I've been getting these glimpses of a grown-up Chris. And I really like what I see.

My Chris has always been a sensitive little guy. He's pretty in-tune with what people are feeling and I just love that about him. He has a big heart. He's the kind of kid who genuinely feels bad if he does something to hurt or disappoint someone. And he honestly likes to make people happy. He has a strong built-in conscience and an empathy for those around him. I plan on doing my best to nurture that so he will grow into a man with the same kind heart he has as a young boy.

Just this morning, he showed his soft side, so to speak. I bought him some Captain America tattoos for his birthday. I thought that would be cool because he's such a big fan these days. So, he opens his tattoos and says, "I already have these." I quickly said, "no you don't," thinking he was mistaken. I was just as quickly put in my place by the seven year old boss of the house when she clearly stated that he indeed does have those already! Well, I guess I really am getting old because I still don't remember buying those for him before now! lol. But, I said something like "shoot, I'm sorry. I didn't know you already had those." And Chris's response... "It's ok mom. I lost my other ones so it's good you bought me more." I'm sure they're not lost. They're probably in our closet with the other tattoos. But isn't he just such a sweetheart for trying to make me feel better about it? :)

In addition to his sweetheartedness, he's so darn funny and adorably cute too! I just love listening to his stories at the dinner table. He's stinking hilarious! His teacher and I were talking last night about his scrunchie face. If you know Chris, you have probably seen it. If not, you are really missing out! He has the cutest expressions but  the scrunchie face really takes the cake. He knows it, too. Whenever I try to tease him about it, he gets a huge smile on his face. Which, in turn, makes me smile too. He always knows how to make me smile. Always has. He's the kind of kid that you have to turn your back on so he won't know you're laughing when you're trying really hard to be serious about something you're saying to him. What a stinker he is!

So I wanted to take a minute today to say Happy Birthday to my little guy. He's the joy of my life in so many ways. And I hope, when he is grown, he remains the big-hearted, sensitive yet silly guy that he is now. Happy 5th Birthday Little Bud!

Thankful Thursday... Unexpected Niceties

I've decided to make Thursday my thankful day. Partly because of the alliteration. And partly because it's usually been a long week by Thursday and I could use the reminder that people are generally nice. :)

As I said in my previous post, I am slightly addicted to craigslist. And I also mentioned we were going to pick up a free coffee table yesterday. Well, the plan went awry. Eric wasn't able to find the house number to pick up the table. I thought maybe it was because he's not familiar with the area. Ha! Wasn't I wrong...

I asked my boss, Chris, who lives near where the table was, if he would be willing to pick it up for me this morning. Otherwise, it was going to the fire pit or Goodwill. And I certainly didn't want that! He agreed. That's the first nice part.

But when he got to work this morning, he had no table. I repeat, no table! Rats! I really wanted that darn table. But he said the same thing as Eric: he wasn't able to find the house number. So, the question then became, did this house really even exist? And was there a table at all? :)

Next thing I knew, both my bosses were leaving again. Where to? Why, they were going to find that house and get my table! They are gone right now, on a mission for little old me and my free old coffee table. So, not only was Chris willing to pick up the table when he wasn't far from the location, now they are making an extra trip to get it. Second part of the niceness.

Third part, and probably more important than the table :), is that they are going to look at my car this afternoon. It's overheating and, of course, I don't know why. I should know a whole heck of a lot more about cars than I do, considering what my dad did for a living. But, alas, I know just about nothing. And, I don't exactly have a lot of extra cash. So, when my car goes haywire, I need help. This is not the first time they've helped me with my car either. Thank goodness I have people to help me out of the jams I find myself in.

And so, the decision to start Thankful Thursdays on my blog. I could sit down and have a good cry (believe me, it would be easy enough to do). But, instead, I'm going to count my blessings. Because I have many. And am, indeed, very thankful for that!
