Vintage Crate Turned Desktop Paper Organizer

Today I'm sharing a vintage crate project with you.

I love vintage crates, don't you?

This crate was an estate sale find. I'm not sure why I couldn't just let this old girl stay a plain-old crate. But... I just couldn't. I guess I figured she'd been a crate long enough.

Now it was her time to shine!

Here she is before (almost before anyway! lol). I realized after I'd started painting that I forgot a before picture. Again! So I quickly snapped this one to show you.

I used Virginia Chestnut on the outside of the crate.

Its such a wonderful, rich brown!

I also waxed it with dark aging wax to make it an even deeper shade.

For the inside, Barcelona Orange with a coat of Johnston Daffodil over that, brushed every which way so you can see the strokes. And only lightly coated in some spots, so the Orange would show through.

I painted the edges with (are you ready for it...?) Santa Fe Turquoise.

Sorry, can't help it. I just love these colors together.

I guess lots of other people must like them too, judging by the response to our

2 Repurposed Shutters.

I then applied clear wax over all of that.

Eric then made some cleats and shelves so this little gal could hold papers on the desktop.

We gave her three shelves, all of which got the same paint treatment as the rest of the original crate.

This old gal is just the perfect size to hold regular size paper and a few pretty accessories too!

I'm so glad I decided to give this crate a new life as a pretty office organizer.

She fits the bill just perfectly!

Oh, What Love Can Do!

You may remember our Card Catalog Inpsired Table. If not, we'd love for you to check it out. But. long story short, before that was an eight-drawer table, it just a simple cubby bin. We actually flipped it sideways from what was intended to be the top in order to make the table. Well, it had this piece of wood on the top that we removed.

Now, it's this pretty little sign!

I just love making signs for our business.

What can I say...

I'm a sign maker by day so I guess it spills over into the evening as well. :) I enjoy designing pretty little signs without any restrictions put on my by the customer. These signs are all my handy work. I think that's why I enjoy them so much.

This little piece of wood was a dark color, not quite green and not quite brown. Pretty much mud! I liked the look of the wood and the way it was weathered and chipping a little on the edges. So I decided to work with the color.

I painted some Ce Ce Caldwell's Traverse City Cherry over the original color.

I immediately fell in love!

Once it was dry, I applied my vinyl stencil and began painting the love part of the lettering with Santa Fe Turquoise. I decided to use a different color on the rest because I wanted the 2nd part of the saying to stand out from the first part. So I used Johnston Daffodil on the other lettering and then on the flowers. Once dry, I simply dry-brushed some Turquoise over the Daffodil to give the flowers a softer look.

I couldn't have been happier when I took the stencil off!

This is one of my favorites :)

A Charming Picket Fence

Last week I posted a little tutorial on how to make your own
wire flowers.

Today I'd like to show you a quick piece of decor I made with those.

I snagged a couple pieces of garden picket fencing from a sale last summer. I previously used one to make a little sign. But the 2nd one has just been sitting around. Waiting.

Once I started making these cute and easy little wire flowers, I got inspired!

So I took out some burlap, roughly marked off where it would show between the pickets, and alternately painted it with Barcelona Orange and Johnston Daffodil.

I painted a light coat of Santa Fe Turquoise over the fencing and attached my burlap to the back, trimming it off after I had stapled it on.

My wire flowers were all set to go. I had used buttons that would coordinate with my paint colors for this piece. And I painted a little Johnston Daffodil on the flowers I was going to place over the orange, just to make them pop a little more.

I simply attached them by sewing them onto the burlap and this cute little piece was finished.

This charming little picket fence is the perfect match for our shutter shelf and crafty spring bouquets!

Make a Wish (wall hook)

Here is another one of the little pretties we debuted with our repurposed shutters the other day.

A cute little pallet board hook for the wall.

This project was easy as pie (which sometimes isn't really all that easy, depending on the pie. lol)

I found some pallet wood pieces in Eric's scrap bin last week. I picked some that were just about the same length and I glued and nailed them onto a vertical 4th piece of scrap wood on the back.

I love pallet wood because it always has nail or staple holes, gouges and miscellaneous flaws.

It's always so perfectly imperfect!

Once everything had dried, I simply painted on some Annie Sloan Barcelona Orange, then a little Ce Ce Caldwell's Johnston Daffodil and finally some Santa Fe Turquoise. I didn't distress a thing, just painted it quickly, hitting and missing wherever I felt like it.

I just happened to have a few stencil letters that I cut apart and placed randomly and a little crookedly onto the board. Then used Aubusson Blue for the lettering.

I used Barcelona Orange again on a double-hook I had lying around in my pieces/parts box.

Finally I added clear wax to everything, then attached the hook under the lettering (and dabbed some paint on the screw heads too) and a little twine hanger off the back.

This little board matches our new shelf perfectly.

Can you tell by my color choices lately that I am SO ready for spring? :)

1 Shutter, 2 Ways!

I'm so excited to show off our shutters today!

We picked this pair of shutters up last summer at my favorite barn sale near Nashville, MI.

And they've been sitting in my garage ever since...

Guess I just needed the right inspiration for them.

I think Spring was exactly what I needed to get my mind working on what to make out of them.

(Or at least the thought of spring, since it's still only in the teens here today!)

For one, Eric made a pocket and attached it to the front. It's now a super cute mail holder. :)

I painted it with Ce Ce Caldwell's Johnston Daffodil and Santa Fe Turquoise. A little dry brushing, distressing and some wax (along with a few painted hooks for keys), and she's all set for Spring!

I added a few wire flowers for extra cuteness :)

And this is the 2nd shutter...

She's now a shabby shelf.

Eric simply cut a pallet board for the top. I found the little brackets at a local store here called Flat River Cottage. I painted everything in Cottonwood Sienna and then roughly brushed on Johnston Daffodil over that and added some clear wax.

Then I, (yes I), attached all the pieces together and, voila!

A small shelf just perfect for brightening up a wall!

I made the rest of these little lovelies to go with it. I'll tell you more about those later this week.

Now I can enjoy the impending spring (it will indeed come eventually, right?) inside my house, despite the weather!

Next up... some spring cleaning! lol

Eggs in a Basket {or two!}

I have seen so many beautiful decoupaged eggs on Pinterest and all the different parties I've been linking up to. Combine that with the beautiful sunshine we had yesterday (although very cold temps), and I've got spring on the brain.
It made me get the egg fever too!

So I got out the plastic eggs from last year's Easter baskets, the Mod Podge and some fabric scraps.

And started gluing away!

I found that it was easy enough to use strips around the middle of the eggs, but much easier to use smaller pieces for the rest of them. They just conformed to the contours better that way. And the biggest problem with decoupaging the eggs was my time constraint and, therefore, sticky fingers! I was trying to get them done before I had to leave the house on Saturday and didn't really have much time for drying. If I do more (and I just might!) I will do the middles and then let that dry before doing the tops and bottoms. My uber-sticky fingers kept wanting to pull the material off the egg. And that's just no good! :)

I chose aqua fabric for my eggs. No big surprise there! I do love aqua after all! To coordinate with the baskets I had already painted, I also used a white fabric with pretty light brown flowers and some orange paint.

I added some twine and a vintage button to one of the orange eggs. If I would have had more time that morning, I would have added the twine and button to the other orange eggs, too. I like how it turned out. I may go back and do just that when I get a chance. :)

I got out some brown paper grass and then stole some aqua and lime green grass from my son's basket (shame on me!) and mixed it all together and added it to these precious little baskets I had painted the day before. I used Ce Ce Caldwell Cottonwood Sienna on the baskets and then applied a light coat of Johnston Daffodil over that. I simply LOVE how these turned out.

I'm not usually a big fan of baskets, but these were too cute. They were small and made of wood chip so I purchased them awhile back for 25 cents each at our local thrift store.

Once I had the baskets painted, I then painted a couple of chipboard embellishments (first in Destin Gulf Green and then in Santa Fe Turquoise). I had bought these at Michael's for only $1 for the whole bag. I think there are about 12 similar pieces in the bag. I sure do love me the dollar section! I painted a vintage button with Johnston Daffodil and attached the shipboard pieces and the button to the baskets with some trusty old gorilla glue. Kind of overkill on the glue, but it was in my reach and I was in a hurry! :)
