Junk-Style Wall Organizer

Chippy Hardware on a Wall Organizer via http://deniseonawhim.blogspot.com
Today I'm sharing what I think is a really fun project that I made to keep for my very own. This beauty has a little bit of everything: Beadboard. Chippy Paint. Rusty Metal. Burlap. Chalkboards. Do I have your attention yet?

Fabulous Farmhouse Tour: Mudroom & Storage

This vintage white scale sitting atop an old cabinet with a beautiful dark wood top is the first thing you'll see when you walk into Mary's house from the back porch. I just can't get enough of those little pops of red against the turquoise walls! Follow me inside the mudroom for more lovelies!

Cherished Memories Corkboard

We had this really great, detailed frame in the garage. I finally pulled it out and painted it. Using Annie Sloan™ Graphite, I painted the entire frame, then dry brushed some Duck Egg blue over the detailing, finishing it off with a coat of clear wax.
Next, I cut some cork to size from a plain-jane corkboard we had sitting around and inserted/glued it into the back of the frame.
I added some simple blue ric-rac, painted a piece of chipboard I had on-hand with Graphite and used my trusty awl to put a hole in it. I inserted the cherished memories metal tag (another scrapbooking embellishment) into the hole, glued some pretty matching flowers on the chipboard and added a few vintage buttons and she was finished.

I think she's awfully pretty now. Hope you do too!

Jewelry Box {with checker drawer pulls}

We recently finished this little jewelry box.
I debuted it on Monday in a photo of our Broken Chair Chalkboard Shelf.

Eric built this for me to paint and it's so cute!
This was bare wood, so I started with some latex paint in a light blue shade.
Over that I added some Ce Ce Caldwell's Pittsburgh Gray.

But my favorite part are the drawer pulls!
These are checker pieces painted with Virginia Chestnut and a dry brush coat of Santa Fe Turquoise.
I bought the checkers awhile back at a local store and had previously painted these 3.
I love how they look on these small drawers.
Just the right size for this little cutie!

I also cut a vinyl stencil and painted the daisies, 1 on each side and 2 on the top, with the light blue paint as well.
I think this would be just perfect for special young lady!

A Few Junky Office Accessories

Earlier this week, I showed you this old crate we made into a desktop organizer.
You can see that project here.
Today I'm going to share the accessories I made to go along with it.
This little tiered organizer is made from a piece I sawed off an old chair leg (the aqua piece on the very top), part of a table leg (the orange part) and some metal kitchen molds (maybe?) that I picked up at our local thrift store.
I always like the look of the tiered stands people make out of bundt pans and such. So when I saw these molds, I thought they would work great for a mini version!

I painted the outside of the molds with Santa Fe Turquoise and used E6000 to adhere the bottom piece to the old table leg Eric had cut to size for me. The top was a little trickier. The spindle was not wide enough in diameter to glue the metal to it. So I made a trip to the hardware and found a rubber washer with the right inside diameter. Then I glued that to the spindle and the metal mold to the rubber washer.
I then added some lettering...
You can't use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have. (Maya Angelou)
It's just printed off the laser jet onto regular paper, cut it and Mod Podged onto the metal.

I figured a desk needs a pencil holder, right?
So I painted this tin can with Destin Gulf Green, added a pretty brown ribbon with aqua sequins and one of my leftover wire flowers from a previous project.
This pencil holder looks so cute sitting there in our new pretty desktop organizer!

We also made an easel clipboard out of some leftover barn wood.
I'l be sharing that with you tomorrow so be sure to visit again:)

Vintage Crate Turned Desktop Paper Organizer

Today I'm sharing a vintage crate project with you.
I love vintage crates, don't you?
This crate was an estate sale find. I'm not sure why I couldn't just let this old girl stay a plain-old crate. But... I just couldn't. I guess I figured she'd been a crate long enough.
Now it was her time to shine!

Here she is before (almost before anyway! lol). I realized after I'd started painting that I forgot a before picture. Again! So I quickly snapped this one to show you.
I used Virginia Chestnut on the outside of the crate.
Its such a wonderful, rich brown!
I also waxed it with dark aging wax to make it an even deeper shade.
For the inside, Barcelona Orange with a coat of Johnston Daffodil over that, brushed every which way so you can see the strokes. And only lightly coated in some spots, so the Orange would show through.
I painted the edges with (are you ready for it...?) Santa Fe Turquoise.
Sorry, can't help it. I just love these colors together.
I guess lots of other people must like them too, judging by the response to our
I then applied clear wax over all of that.
Eric then made some cleats and shelves so this little gal could hold papers on the desktop.
We gave her three shelves, all of which got the same paint treatment as the rest of the original crate.
This old gal is just the perfect size to hold regular size paper and a few pretty accessories too!
I'll be talking about the little goodies in these pics this week too, so be sure to stop back by. :)
I'm so glad I decided to give this crate a new life as a pretty office organizer.
She fits the bill just perfectly!
See that little box there on the right of the crate in the pic above? That's my cool new ruler box. It's got sentimental value for me. If you missed the post, you can check it out here.

A Sentimental Ruler Box

Today I'm sharing a cool little project with you.
I think it's especially sweet because it has some sentimental value for me.
I grabbed this old ruler at an antique show at the Lake Odessa Fairgrounds last summer.
It was a must have for me when I saw where the ruler was from.
This particular old ruler, which was in excellent vintage condition, was from a business that was once located on the street I grew up on.

See the address there...
Turner Street is where I lived my entire life until I moved away to college.
And here, on the inside of the box, you can see the Lansing part.
How cool is that? :)
I asked Eric to make it into a box,
which I'd seen during my Pinterest travels.
He sized it so that I could fit post-it notes in the main compartment.
Of course, I didn't have any regular size post-its when it came to taking these pictures! lol
And I'm going to put paper  clips in the other compartment.
I love my new ruler box.
Vintage. Repurposed. Sentimental.
What more could a girl like me ask for? :)

Be sure to come back next week for some more desk accessories, including an old crate we turned into a paper organizer!

1 Shutter, 2 Ways!

I'm so excited to show off our shutters today!

We picked this pair of shutters up last summer at my favorite barn sale near Nashville, MI.
And they've been sitting in my garage ever since...
Guess I just needed the right inspiration for them.
I think Spring was exactly what I needed to get my mind working on what to make out of them.
(Or at least the thought of spring, since it's still only in the teens here today!)
For one, Eric made a pocket and attached it to the front. It's now a super cute mail holder. :)

I painted it with Ce Ce Caldwell's Johnston Daffodil and Santa Fe Turquoise. A little dry brushing, distressing and some wax (along with a few painted hooks for keys), and she's all set for Spring!
I added a few wire flowers for extra cuteness :)

And this is the 2nd shutter...
 She's now a shabby shelf.
Eric simply cut a pallet board for the top. I found the little brackets at a local store here called Flat River Cottage. I painted everything in Cottonwood Sienna and then roughly brushed on Johnston Daffodil over that and  added some clear wax.

Then I, (yes I), attached all the pieces together and, voila!
A small shelf  just perfect for brightening up a wall!
I made the rest of these little lovelies to go with it. I'll tell you more about those later this week.
Now I can enjoy the impending spring (it will indeed come eventually, right?) inside my house, despite the weather!

Next up... some spring cleaning! lol

Barn Wood Hook Board

The other day I showed you the leaded glass window shelf we made for my friend Karlye. Well, she also wanted some hooks to hang below a piece of decor she had already purchased for her home. She requested barn wood for the hook board. And she was in luck! I just happened to have a few pieces in my garage waiting to be plucked and turned into something fabulous!

She chose this piece with the chippy red paint. Love her choice!
Eric cut the board to the correct size, just a little wider than the piece of decor she wanted to put this under. I made sure to mark where I wanted him to make the cuts so we could keep intact the cool uneven part you see on the left hand side of this pic...
Not to mention, how cool is this old knot on the other side?
I added some dark stain to the edges where Eric had made the cut. The board was old enough that it was looking slightly worn all the way through, but I thought the stain would make anyone forget that we had made the cut at all. It did the trick!

Karlye had also given me these double hooks for the board. But she had purchased them new at the store and they looked, well, brand-spanking new! I used some Ce Ce Caldwell's Virginia Chestnut on those to grunge them up a bit and then I waxed them and attached 5 hooks to the board, offsetting them so they weren't all in a straight line.
I love how this turned out! Just as much as I love the window shelf we made for her. I think that the next time Karlye asks me to make something, I'm just going to have to make 2 of them and keep one for myself! :)

Everyone loves a good party!
