Industrial Cabinet Goodness!

Some of my favorite decor pieces are industrial. I just love the look of metal and wood together in perfect harmony. And, if you ask me, we don't do nearly enough of them! But I'm sharing one with you today that I hope you like!

Cherished Memories Corkboard

We had this really great, detailed frame in the garage. I finally pulled it out and painted it. Using Annie Sloan™ Graphite, I painted the entire frame, then dry brushed some Duck Egg blue over the detailing, finishing it off with a coat of clear wax.
Next, I cut some cork to size from a plain-jane corkboard we had sitting around and inserted/glued it into the back of the frame.
I added some simple blue ric-rac, painted a piece of chipboard I had on-hand with Graphite and used my trusty awl to put a hole in it. I inserted the cherished memories metal tag (another scrapbooking embellishment) into the hole, glued some pretty matching flowers on the chipboard and added a few vintage buttons and she was finished.

I think she's awfully pretty now. Hope you do too!

A Blue Beauty {The Sequel}

We previously showed you our Beauty in Blue Desk Makeover in Duck Egg and Old White. It's one of our most popular posts, so go and check it out if you missed it. :) In the meantime, here's a photo so you can check the two out together.
A friend snatched up that desk and she loves it. She loves it so much that she wanted a dresser to match! She ended up choosing a dresser from a little shop known as My Garage Showroom. It's actually very far from a showroom. There's hardly any room to move in there right now! And it's currently much more full than in this before pic...
This particular dresser was a free-to-me from another friend. Her husband had started scraping the old (and quite bad) paint job off already. He had most of it done except some scraggly areas and one whole side. As soon as Karlye decided to go with this one, I started sanding and scraping. The weather was nice, as it had finally started to get warm here in Michigan, so it wasn't an unpleasant task. And the scraping was pretty easy. I had to fix one corner of the veneer at the bottom, too, but it was basically just gluing it back down and then putting wood fill over it to smooth the edges.
Once sanded, I stained the whole thing in Minwax Jacobean so it would be a nice dark finish like the desk. I did the whole piece since I had to sand it and I wanted it to distress the same as the desk too.

I painted the drawer fronts and the sides in Duck Egg. For the front, I used Old White.
Then, because the desk had nice Old White trim along the corners but this dresser did not, I taped off the sides and the bottoms of each side and painted a faux trim along them.
I distressed. Then waxed with a combination of clear and dark aging wax.
For the finishing touch, I chose knobs that actually didn't match the desk. We used the original hardware for the desk but this dresser only had one knob and, truth be told, doesn't even need any. But it looks so much prettier with the knobs I chose, all white and distressed and flowery. Just a touch of girly :)
I chose 2 different styles but they all have the same chippy finish.
I staggered each drawer so that the knobs on the top and 3rd drawers are 10" from the outside of the dresser and the other four knobs are only 8" from the outside. I thought this boxy dresser deserved a little more pizazz and the knobs did the trick!

Although it seems like the blue on the dresser is a different shade than desk, it really is just a product of the difference in lighting I had to work with for each photo shoot.

I hope she is as happy with her new dresser as she was with the desk! Next week, we'll be showing you a really awesome chest of drawers we did for her too. But you can get a sneak peak of that project this Thursday when I guest post at Alderberry Hill {So excited!}

Chalkboard Shelf from a Broken Chair

Last fall, we were lucky enough to get permission to raid an old barn. And boy, did we ever! :) We got lots of cool goodies from that adventure!
While we were there, we peeked into an old silo too. In it, was this old broken chair back.
I'm so glad we grabbed it, even tho, at the time, I had no idea what I was going to do with it!

I finally found inspiration from Angie at Knick of Time Interiors with her awesome collection of repurposed chair backs. You should definitely check out her post, too, if you haven't seen it yet.
When we picked this one up, it was basically just the back and what I think may have been an arm of the chair. I detached the arm, cleaned it all off with soapy water, and started painting.
I decided to make the back into a chalkboard area. Who doesn't love chalkboard, after all?

For the sides, I used Duck Egg blue under Old White. I painted the cross pieces and the spindles in Santa Fe Turquoise and added Smokey Mountain over that.
Then I distressed and waxed.
I knew I wanted to add a shelf. And it just so happened that the arm I had removed was almost a perfect fit. Eric had to trim it a bit, but it worked out great! I gave that the same paint job as the rest, Duck Egg and Old White on the top and bottom of the shelf, and Santa Fe Turquoise and Smokey Mountiain on the outside edge.

It's just the right size for a few antique bottles. :)
I added three white hooks to the bottom spindle.
Still, something was missing...

I wanted to put something between the sides and the chalkboard area, but was unsure what I wanted to use there. One day at work, I was looking at some backgrounds for a design I was working when I came across a denim stock photo. Then it hit me! I could cut up an old pair of jeans to attach to my chair back.
I went home and grabbed a pair of my daughter's jeans that had grown too small, cut them into strips and painted some Old White and Santa Fe onto the denim. Once it had dried, I simply folded it so the raw edges would be in back and sewed a cute little button on to keep it tucked together. Then stapled it to the back of the chair!
The denim strips would be perfect for using as a memo board with some simple  clothespins, don't you think?
I just love how this one turned out! Hope you like it too :)

Leaded Glass Window Shelf

My friend Karlye brought me this window when she came to pick up her vintage desk a short time ago. She had purchased the window in November and wanted to make a shelf out of it. I thought that sounded like an excellent plan! So we picked colors out and I went to work.

I had Eric cut the shelf and then he attached it for me. The window had previously been painted a few different colors. Purple was even under there somewhere! So I set to work with some Duck Egg. Then painted over that with Graphite. Distressed it. Waxed it with dark aging wax.

Added some dark grey pulls I had lying around to pretty it up a bit.
And it was done!

(Except for hanging it on MY wall and staging it a bit for pictures. I finally got that done last night. And then promptly took it down so I wouldn't tempted to pay her for the window and keep it!)
I love the Graphite with the leaded glass. I think it looks very classy.

Hope she loves it too!

Beauty in Blue... Vintage Desk Makeover

I am so excited to share this furniture makeover with you! Between a full-time job and 2 kids (not to mention a really tiny home in which to work), I don't get as many large projects done as I'd like. It's a shame, too, because they really don't take very long when you're using chalk paint. It dries so quickly and is so easily distressed. But, with limited time, it is what it is. Anyway, on to the show!

This old gal was one of our very first furniture purchases. We bought it from a craigslist ad and I've had it in my home for quite some time now, actually using it to store my odds and ends of the business (sandpaper, hardware, you name it!). But I've been dying to paint it for awhile and I finally got everything cleared out of it and moved it to my work space. My work space, at least in the winter, consists of a (maybe) 8' x 4' area in front of my washer and dryer! lol. It's the best I've got so we make do. And the kids are very aware that they must leave whatever is in the work space alone! That being said, they did slip this weekend and attempt to spin a top on my new desk surface! Yes... a spinning top! Thought I might have to put them outside in the snow after that one! :)

After all, I had sanded the top of this beauty down, stained it 3 times with my favorite dark stain and put 3 coats of poly on it. After all that hard work, I didn't want to redo it! Again! Which is precisely what I told them. And they proceeded to keep their paws off!

When it came to choosing a color scheme for this desk, I knew exactly what I wanted to do. I had pinned a Miss Mustard Seed project long ago, when we first started this little venture we call On A Whim. She had painted a very similar desk with these colors and I simply fell in love when I saw it. I just love the Annie Sloan™ Old White and the dark wood top together. And the Duck Egg Blue on the drawer fronts and the sides is simply a perfect match with those. When I happened to get some Duck Egg for another project, I just knew I needed to work on this old desk!

The previous owners had taken good care of her. I did fill in a few dings on the sides and top. But not all of them. I kept a few smaller marks on the top because I knew they would end up adding to this girl's character when she was all brand new

After painting/waxing/distressing/staining I just love how this Beauty in Blue turned out.

How about you?
